Welcome to Rennes!

Rennes is the capital of Brittany and is ideally situated at the heart of a dual carriageway network linking Brittany to Paris and Normandy and to the areas south of the Loire divide. The city of Rennes is very pleasant with its parks and gardens and the delightful old town with its faithfully restored streets and squares, colourful traditional timber-framed houses and outstanding buildings by famous architects.

Every Saturday morning, France’s second largest market invites visitors to browse the colourful stalls of over 300 producers from across Brittany, in the unique historical backdrop of old Rennes. Come and discover Coucou de Rennes chickens, Petit Gris melons and Reinette apples, dry and fruity cider, shellfish and the unmissable salted butter.

A visit to the Thabor gardens is highly recommended. They were designed by Denis Bühler on the orchard of one of the oldest abbeys in Rennes in the 19th century. The gardens, which are spread over 10 hectares in the city centre and include a French-style garden, a picturesque garden with exotic species, fountains, an aviary, a rose garden, statues, greenhouses and a bandstand, are rightly regarded as one of France’s finest.

You will find a great choice of restaurants, bars and pavement cafés in the old town and one of the largest markets in France is held on Saturday mornings. There you can find all kinds of French delicacies such as cheese, sea food, crêpes and galettes and everything else from flowers to fresh meet.

Les Tombées de la Nuit Festival - July 2 - 15, 2015

Every year, in early summer, surprise and wonderment take over in the streets of Rennes.

A truly unique festival, Les Tombées de la Nuit (Nightfall) brings street art and performance into the spotlight and offers artists and inhabitants a chance to come face to face in some rather unexpected places.

It’s a well-known fact that the ancient people of Gaul were afraid that the sky would one day fall on their heads. But here, each summer, it’s completely the opposite, and the people of Rennes just can’t wait for the Tombées de la Nuit (Nightfall) festival. A pop concert at the opera house, the French ‘whatever’ championships in a sports hall, a disorganised village fete in a school playground, or a play on the roof of a block of flats - anything and everything goes at Les Tombées de la Nuit. Whether the show’s XXL or Lilliputian in scale, a concert or a circus, the public always leaves with a surprised smile on its face, because this festival is about artistic exchange and dialogue. When artists and locals come face to face in a public place, and the former encourage the latter to participate in their work, the result is bound to be both surprising and moving. The festival was created in 1980 to breathe new life into the town centre and draw attention to creativity in Brittany. Since then it has succeeded in cultivating the art of artistic surprise, under the direction of a Franco-Belgian team, Claude Guinard and Philippe Kaufman.

 Welcome to Brittany!

Rennes is less than 70 km away from the northern coast and its two most impressive attractions: Saint-Malo, a walled charming corsair city and Mont Saint-Michel, the impressive "Wonder of the Western World" forming a tower in the heart of an immense bay invaded by the highest tides in Europe.
